This presentation will examine the unique struggle affecting clients from non-western cultural backgrounds, in developing a sense of personal identity amidst competing cultural forces, specifically those of non-western and western traditions. It will look closely at the structure of these family systems, their impact on identity development, and the psychological complexities that arise for clients who are in the process of individuation. A key component of this presentation is to inform clinicians of these dynamics to better equip them to effectively treat and support their clients in finding a balance between family loyalty and personal expression.

Learning objectives

Participants will be able to:

1. Understand family dynamics of collectivistic cultures and the issues that arise for them during the acculturation process
2. Identify the struggle for personal identity for clients from collectivistic family backgrounds and reside in Western societies
3. Identify the psychological effects of this cultural struggle, particularly as it relates to shame, guilt, and codependency
4. Learn how to work therapeutically with clients from collectivistic family systems; collaborate to find realistic solutions and how to express support to sensitive issues

Biography:

Rincy Mathew is an AMFT with masters degrees in both Clinical Psychology and Public Policy from Pepperdine University. She maintains a private practice in Santa Monica, where she works with individuals and couples using psychodynamic and humanistic approaches and specializes in complex trauma, addiction, co-dependency, and generational trauma.

She has a special interest in working with clients from non-western cultural backgrounds who struggle to balance traditional family values with individual expression. She hopes to offer clarity and insight to the complex nature of this intersection of cultures in order to find one’s “authentic self” in the midst of opposing cultural expectations.

Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, Rincy has been a Program Director for Insight Enrichment Group, a private boutique specializing in life coaching and case management services, where she works with clients and collaborates with mental health providers to help reintegrate individuals suffering from emotional and psychological issues back into the community.
